Dr. Whitaker brings nearly three decades of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, following eight years of experience in academic medicine.

His pharmaceutical industry experience includes a number of senior clinical leadership roles across multiple biotech companies and global pharmaceutical organizations, including serving as CMO of three different Biotech companies. He built and led a number of high-performing global teams, with the majority of this work being in the neuroscience therapeutic area. Most recently he served as CMO of Seelos Therapeutics, with previous roles at Alder Biopharmaceuticals, Wyeth, and Shire Pharmaceuticals. At Shire, he served as Vice President and Head of the Neuroscience Therapeutic Area, overseeing mid- to late-stage development for CNS programs and guiding multiple product approvals. Across his career he has led or supported regulatory strategies resulting in six NDAs, one BLA, four MAAs, three NDSs, and 15 supplemental NDAs, along with filings across key international markets including Japan, Australia, Brazil, and Mexico.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Duke University, and received his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed a residency training program in psychiatry and a fellowship in clinical psychopharmacology at UVM/Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in Burlington. Prior to joining the pharmaceutical industry, he held a variety of teaching positions at the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine and the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, including Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the Inpatient Services, Executive Committee of the Vermont Regional Sleep Disorders Center, and Director of the Psychopharmacology Clinic.
